The 6th edition of Hernia Observership week at Belle Vue Hospital, Kolkata was conducted from 13/12/19 to 17/12/19 under the aegis of Hernia Society of India. Surgeons from across the country and from Bangladesh attended the course where they witnessed surgery on 11 cases of complex groin and ventral hernia. The procedures demonstrated were IPOM plus, TAPP, eTEP for groin and ventral hernia, SCOLA, TAR and Peritoneal flap hernioplasty. Operating faculties were Dr Sarfaraz Baig, Dr Pallawi Priya and Dr Ashwin Thangavelu. There were lectures and clinical rounds aimed at understanding clinical evaluation and CT interpretation of hernia, procedure selection and tricks on tackling difficult cases. Surgeons also got the opportunity to get hands on training during the course

Bangalore Endoscopic Training Institute and Research Centre, AV Hospital, Bangalore conducted a laparoscopic hernia training course from September 20th -22nd 2019. AV Hospital is recognized as “Centre of Excellence in Hernia Surgery” by Hernia Society of India and Asia Pacific Hernia Society.
This training course of 3 days was endorsed by Hernia Society of India.This was the 3rd Hernia course of this year. Dr. M. Ramesh was the Director and Dr.Ganesh Shenoy was the Program Coordinator of this course. This was attended by 5 surgeons across India. This training course included Live operative demonstrations, Endotrainer sessions on different modules on BEST Endotrainers and Didactic sessions.
The live operative session included Laparoscopic TAPP, TEP, E-TEP and IPOM Plus repairs. These surgeries were also web-casted through www.lapguru.com which was watched by many others. The endotrainer sessions included endosuturing and knotting, IPOM plus repair for ventral hernia and TAPP repair for inguinal hernia on indigenously prepared modules on BEST Endotrainers.
Internationally renowned faculty were the part of Didactic sessions. These didactic sessions were transmitted through Zoom, a novel way of teleconferencing. All the sessions were successfully conducted flawlessly. Dr. Ajay Kriplani, Dr Rajesh Khullar, Dr. Anil Sharma, Dr. Ramesh Agarwalla, Dr. Sandeep Dave, Dr. Deepraj Bhandarkar, Dr. Ramesh Punjani, Dr Sarfaraz Baig and Dr.T. Sivakumar were the external faculty for this course. The trainees received Certificate of training from BEST Institute and Research Centre, Course Manual and DVD containing Master Videos of various types of Laparoscopic Hernia surgeries.
A workshop and CME on Endohernia surgery were conducted at Fortis Hospital, Vasant Kunj on February 15th, 2019. This was attended by delegates from Kerala, Delhi, and Punjab. Four operations – TEP, TAPP, IPOM plus and Rives Stoppa procedure – were demonstrated and the guidelines for each were discussed during the workshop. In addition, there were lectures on Infection control and sterilization and Tips and tricks to avoid complications.

The 13th annual conference of the Hernia Society of India was conducted by Belle Vue Clínic, Kolkata. The local organisers were Dr Sarfaraz J Baig, Dr Satyapriya DeSarkar and Dr Ramesh Agarwalla. They were ably supported by HSI core group – Dr Sandeep Dave, Dr Manish Baijal, Dr Deepraj Bhandarkar, Dr Sumeet Shah, Dr Ganesh Shenoy, Dr Sivakumar, Dr Achal Gupta and others.
The 3 day event incorporated pre conference courses, live demonstrations of Lichtenstein, TAPP, TEP, eTEP TAR, IPOM, IPOM plus, open TAR and SCOLA followed by didactic lectures by experts.
The attendance of 800 surgeons and packed halls from all over the world was a testimony to the usefulness of the scientific content. In addition to the most renowned national faculty, the presence of Todd Heniford, Filip Muysoms, Wolfgang Reinpold, Andrew de Beaux, Macky Faylona, Domingo Sampang, Sarder Nayeem, Ritu Khare, Ananth Pai, Merezban Katrak and Suthep U ensured a rich academic content. Teleconferencing with Brian Jacob, David Chen, Eric Pauli and Yohann Renard was a session that the audience found extremely interesting.
The pre conference courses on Laparoscopic Groin Hernia repair, Laparoscopic ventral Hernia repair, Robotics, Newer Hernia Procedures, Component Separation Technique on Cadaver and Mentoring saw an unprecedented response running to packed houses. A total of 150 delegates participated in these training programs.
There was a poll survey conducted at the beginning and at the end of the conference that showed up how the sessions influenced the thought process of the surgeons.
Evening programs were designed to be musical to soothen the tired minds and even the surgeons demonstrated their creative talents with elan.
This was a no paper, no waste conference and as such no mementos/ paper certificates were given. Only e certificates have been issued to all participants. There was a fair representation of the young surgeons of India on the stage in both organising the event and presenting their astounding work.
HSICON 2019 was a sincere endeavour to improve the current understanding about hernia and spread the awareness of modern practices to all the surgeons in the community.

[URIS id=1501]On bright sunny morning of auspicious days of Indian navsamvatsar holy Saturday 6th April 2019, Department of Surgery, G. R. Medical College, Gwalior in collaboration with ASI City Chapter, Gwalior, under the aegis of Hernia Society of India and Asia Pacific Hernia Society in the city of Gwalior hosted its first Midterm Conference of Hernia Society of India and welcomed over 350 delegates & faculty member to the new international auditorium of Cancer Hospital Research Center at Gwalior. The Chairman and secretary of this conference were Dr. Achal Gupta and Dr. Anurag Chauhan.
This increasingly popular conference aimed to train postgraduate medical students and practicing surgeons interested in a career in laparoscopic hernia surgery. This conference delivered exciting two days package with live operative workshops, video presentations, student poster, and paper presentation and if that was not enough, incredible talks from nationally renowned speakers like Dr. AK Kriplani, Dr. Rajesh Khullar, Dr. Deepraj Bhandarkar, Dr. Manish Baijal, Dr. Vijay Borgaonkar. Dr. Vandana Soni, Dr. Randeep Wadhawan, Dr. Sumeet Shah, Dr. Amitabh Goyal, Dr. Sudhir Kalhan, Dr. Sanjay Jain Dr. Siddarth Tamaskar and many others.
The first day of talks unfolded basics of Hernia surgery to video presentations on TEP, TAPP, eTEP, TAR, SCOLA and ended on a session on AWR., National HSI, President Dr. Sandeep Dave sent his blessings will an emotional message on Skype which captured the heart of audience.
A crisp informal inauguration by National Executives of HIS in the afternoon was followed by lunch. In late noon there were interesting video sessions & informative talks on current and newer advances in the management of hernia including concluding the session on AWR followed by a lecture on Robotic Surgery.
In the evening a Gala Dinner was Hosted by the organizing team in which Dr. Achal Gupta, the Organising Chairman mesmerized the audience with his performance on Electric Guitar. The second day of the conference begins with multiple live operative workshop session by eminent dexterous laparoscopic surgeons of national and international repute like Dr. Rajesh Khullar, Dr. CP Kothari, Dr. AK Kriplani, Dr. Randeep Wadhawan, Dr. Mukund Khaitan, Dr. Manish Baijal, Dr. Sumeet Shah. They efficiently demonstrated TAPP, TEP, eTEP, IPOM and IPOM plus, Rives Stoppa and open TAR and lastly open inguinal hernia repair techniques and provided a great learning opportunity to delegates and postgraduates from various part of country.
Free paper sessions and poster presentation were done simultaneously in other hall and enlightened the audience on research in Hernia Surgery. This was a Conference well appreciated by the Faculty and delegates and will be remembered for a long time.

One day Hernia Updates was organized on 24 th March 2019 at Aurangabad. Theme was "Learn the Latest". Dr Vijay Borgaonkar, Vice President – West Zone Hernia Society of India was the Organizing Chairman and Course Director. The event was organized under aegis of Hernia Society of India, Asia Pacific Hernia Society and International Hernia Collaboration by Krupamayi Hospitals, Seth Nandlal Dhoot Hospital and Aurangabad Surgical Society". Dr. Rajesh Khullar, Dr. B Ramanna, Dr. Sarfaraj Baig, Dr. Deepraj Bhandarkar, Dr. Ramesh Punjani, Dr. Sameer Rege and Dr. Pramod Shinde participated as Faculty
Live transmission of operative cases took place from 8.30 am to 1.30pm from Krupamayi Hospitals, Aurangabad. The cases demonstrated were open Rives Stoppa's hernioplasty, e-TEP, TAR and TEP. This was followed by e-Inaugration eco friendly impressive inaugural function. M.P. Shri Rajkumarji Dhoot, trustee of Seth Nandlal Dhoot Hospital was chief guest for inauguration. After the lunch break the following presentations were highly appreciated by all the delegates: Anatomy revisited by Dr. Vijay Borgaonkar, Imaging in abdominal Wall reconstruction by Prof. B. Ramana, Concept of AWR by Dr. Deepraj Bhandarkar, Pre-operative optimization in ventral hernia by Dr. Ramesh Punjani, Which operation when? By Dr. Sarfaraj Baig, Transversus abdominis release – technical tipsby Prof. Sameer Rege and Anterior component separation by Dr. Pramod Shinde.
There was 270 delegates from surrounding 10 districts participated actively. Overall Scientific Program, hall Arrangement, workshop, hospitality were superb and appreciated by all.
[URIS id=1515]A two-day training program on Abdominal Wall Reconstruction was conducted at Belle Vue Clinic on 23rd and 24th November 2018. This was the fifth such program organized at this center in the last two years under the aegis of Hernia Society of India.
15 delegates from across the country attended the program to learn complex hernia surgery. Seven surgeries were demonstrated over two days including open and endoscopic Posterior Component Separation, Endoscopic Rives Stoppa, Anterior Component Separation, Hybrid Posterior Component Separation and IPOM plus.
A half day CME was part of the program with lectures on procedure selection in a complex hernia, minimizing complications with AWR procedures, prosthesis properties and selection, and hernia surgery complication management.
