Laparoscopic Hernia Surgery Training course was conducted at Fortis Hospital Cunningham Road Bangalore on 29th and 30th April 2022. This was conducted under the banner FIMAST – Fortis Institute of Minimal Access Surgery Training. The course was endorsed by Hernia Society of India. Dr Ganesh Shenoy is the Director and Chief Coordinator and Dr BS Ramesh is the Organising Committee Chairman of FIMAST.
This course included Live Operative Demonstrations in OT , Video based Lectures, Didactic sessions and Hands on training on Endotrainers on specially designed modules for hernia. Dr Deepraj Bhandarkar, Dr Manish Baijal, Dr Randeep Wadhawan, Dr Ramesh Agarwalla, Dr Sarfaraz Baig, Dr Vijay Borgoankar, Dr Sumeet Shah, Dr Ashwin Masurkar, Dr T. Sivakumar and Dr Balaji Singh were the faculties for video based lectures in this course .
This hernia course was attended by 13 Surgeons from Haryana, Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Iraq. Thirteen laparoscopic hernia surgeries including TEP, TAPP, eTEP for groin hernias, IPOM plus, eTEP RS, SCOM, SCOLA for Ventral hernias, eETEP for lumbar and groin hernia and Nissen’s fundoplication for hiatus hernia were demonstrated in 2 days with active involvement of the participating surgeons .
The course was inaugurated by Dr Vivek Javli, eminent internationally renowned Cardiac surgeon, Chairman Cardiac Sciences, Fortis Hospitals and Patron of FIMAST.
All the participants received a Certificate and a pen drive containing whole gamut of Laparoscopic hernia surgery procedures. The hands on sessions were conducted at Skills lab, Bangalore Medical College .
This HSI endorsed course was a well-received course and was appreciated by all the participated surgeons.
Dr Ashutosh Soni, Executive Committee member of the HSI, organised an HSI endorsed hernia training program at Bhandari Hospital, Jabalpur on 19th December 2021. Ten surgeons attended the course and observe a variety of surgeries including open hernioplasty, TAPP, TAPP and IPOM. Two of the delegates were from teaching facilities of medical college, one from military hospital and others were practising surgeons wishing to improve on their knowledge and skills in the field of hernia surgery.
Basic Laparoscopic Hernia Cadaveric course was conducted by HSI and Sri Ramachandra medical College on 12 March 2022. Ten delegates from all over India attended the course. The Organising Chairman for the course was Prof. K Balaji Singh and Organising Secretary was Prof Naveen Alexander. The faculty for the course were Dr Deepraj Bhandarkar, Dr Manish Baijal, Professor CD Narayanan, and Professor S Saravanan. Dr Manish Baijal gave the introduction and Dr Bhandarkar highlighted activities of HSI. This was followed by three brief video lectures by Dr Naveen Alexander , Professor CD Narayanan, Professor Saravanan. Participants then spent rest of the day performing TEP, TAPP, IPOM and familiarising themselves with exposure for TAR on 4 cadavers.
An HSI endorsed Hernia CME & live workshop was organised at Chandan Hospital Lucknow on March 13th, 2022. The program was a great success with participation of around 70 faculty & delegates from around Lucknow in the program. Four cases were demonstrated live by Dr. Rahul Mahadar, Dr. Jignesh Gandhi, Dr. Randeep Wadhawan & Dr. Subhash Khanna.
Laparoscopic Hernia Surgery Training course was conducted at Fortis Hospital, Cunningham Road, Bangalore on 10th-11th March 2022 by Dr Ganesh Shenoy and Dr B. S. Ramesh.
It was a PACE program on Hernia surgery, a Medtronics initiative. It was a successful and well received course. It was endorsed by Hernia Society of India , the National Chapter of Asia Pacific Hernia Society.
Seven Surgeons from Bihar, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka attended the course. This training course involved Live Operative Demonstrations and Video lectures by Dr Ganesh Shenoy and Team. We had Live Operative Demonstrations of 8 Laparoscopic Hernia Surgeries: TEP ,TAPP,ETEP for groin hernias, IPOM plus, TAPE, Etep-RS, SCOM for ventral hernias and laparoscopic Nissen’s fundoplication for Hiatus Hernia. The operative demonstrations were relayed live to all surgeons through MICROSOFT TEAMS platform. Dr Ashwin Thangavelu, Executive Committee member Hernia Society of India, delivered a lecture on “Laparoscopic TAPP repairs for Groin and Ventral hernias” and shared his experience with the surgeons.
We are happy to inform that a CME and Live Operative Endohernia workshop was organised on 26.02.2022 at the Manipal Hospital , New Delhi an HSI accredited COE.

The 15th Annual Conference of Hernia Society of India was held at Aurangabad on 12th and 13th November 2021. Conference was hosted by Aurangabad Surgical Society, Krupamayi Hospitals and Seth Nandlal Dhoot Hospital. Venue of Conference was Hotel Rama International. COVID Protocol was followed.
On 11th November Executive Committee Meeting has held, presided by Dr. Deepraj Bhandarkar, was well attended by E.C. Members and followed by fellowship and dinner.
12th November 2021 conference was inaugurated digitally at the hands of Founder Trustee of Hernia Society of India Dr. Pradeep Chowbey. Presidential address for year 2020-2021 was delivered by Dr. Ramesh Agarwalla. Dr. Ramesh Agarwalla was felicitated at the hands of Dr. Pradeep Chowbey and conferred citation.
This was followed by prestigious H G Doctor Oration. This was delivered by Prof. M.C. Mishra, former Director of AIIMS Delhi.
Rest of the day was full with scientific sessions, didactic lectures, symposia, panel discussion till late evening.
This was followed by General Body Meeting and then Banquet.
Next day 13th November Live Operative Workshop was conducted. Operations were performed at state Art operation Theatre Complex at Krupamayi Hospital relayed to venue and also on virtual platform.
Six operative procedures were performed TEP by Dr. Manish Baijal, TAPP by Dr. Ashwin Masurkar, eTEP by Dr. Sarfaraj Baig, IpOM+ by Dr. Ramesh Agarwalla, Hiatus Hernia by Dr. Randeep Wadhwan and AWR Retrorectus meshplasty by Dr. Vijay Borgaonkar.
In the afternoon there was symposium on hiatus hernia and free paper session.
There was very good response for free paper/video session.
There were 14 free paper presentation, 7 video presentation for best video prize session. New Session in free presentation from delegates was added this year. It was “I have story to share” and there were 4 participants in these sessions.
First prize for best video was awarded to Dr. Adesh Solanki. Second Prize was awarded to Dr. Pinak Dasgupta.
There was good physical attendee for the conference. 35 faculties attended and participated, 250 registrations and nearly 350 virtual registration. The event was relayed on FaceBook and LapGuru.
A live hernia training program was conducted by Department of General and Laparoscopy surgery unit III at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi on 8th and 9th January 2020. There were 5 participants from different regions of India. Most of the participants were working in Govt Medical Colleges. The first day involved video-based discussions and didactic lectures by the faculty on different topic relating to endoscopic hernia surgery. There were active discussions on important aspects of hernia surgery including importance of sterilisation, usage of mesh, radiology, tip and tricks in various techniques, complications and recent advances. On the second day the delegates were demonstrated 5 different procedures including TEP, TAPP for inguinal and IPOM plus for ventral hernias. Each procedure was explained in minutest detail. The day was concluded with distribution of the certificates to the delegates.

Herniacon-2019, organised by Department of Surgery of Dayanand Medical College Hospital, Ludhiana was held on 22nd -23rd Nov. 2019. It was the first of its kind of event north of Delhi with Dr Atul Mishra as Chairman, Dr Amandeep Singh Nar as Secretary & Dr. Harmandeep Singh as the Treasurer in the core committee. Theme of the event was “Current Practice in Hernia & AWR Surgery”. The academic feast was attended by 400 delegates from all over north India including neighbouring states of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan.
Day-1 on 22nd November show cased a Live Operative Workshop where eminent national faculty demonstrated various techniques such as TEP, TAPP, and eTEP for Inguinal Hernia & IPOM-Plus, eTEP RS, eTEP TAR & open TAR for Ventral Hernia.
Day-2 on 23rd November was a host to lectures panel discussion, master –video sessions, encompassing all the important topics in current practices in hernia & AWR.
The event was graced by eminent national faculty, Dr. Manish Baijal, Dr. Sarfaraz J Baig, Dr Parveen Bhatia, Dr Rahul Mahadar, Dr. Jignesh Gandhi, Dr. A. K. Attri, Dr. Atul Joshi & Dr. Hemant Nautiyal.
Zoom video conference talks were also presented by Dr. B Ramana from Kolkata & Dr. M Ramesh from Bengaluru. The conference concluded with the delegates taking home a crisp update in their knowledge of hernia surgery.
