CMSH HERNIA WORKSHOP – Chelawat Multispeciality Hospital, Mandsaur (MP)

The ‘CMSH Hernia workshop’ recently concluded at Chelawat Multi Specialty Hospital, in Mandsaur on 21 January 2024. It was the first of its kind to be held in Mandsaur and nearby districts. The workshop was constructed on the premises of the current theme of the Hernia Society of India – “Hernia for all”. The program constituted Live operative demonstrations with inside OT experience and round table discussions for surgeons and a separate agenda with didactic lectures and demonstrations for OT staff and technicians.
The organizing committee constituted a Patron- Dr Pradeep Chelawat, Organising secretary – Dr Priyank Chelawat. The chief guest for the occasion was Dr. SN Dubey – a senior most surgeon from Mandsaur. The invited operating faculties included Dr. Ashutosh Soni – Vice president, HSI, Indore, Dr. Sudesh Sharda -Executive committee member, HSI from Central zone, Dr. Ishant Chaurasiya from Vidisha (MP) and Dr Rohan Jain from Barwani, MP and Dr. Vikram Singh Mujalde from Ratlam (MP).
58 delegates from Mandsaur and nearby districts (Ratlam, Neemuch, Manasa) attended the workshop including 32 surgeons and 26 OT assistants and Technicians. Seven live surgical cases were performed by the team which were well received by the audience and incited great discussion inside and outside the operation theatre. Surgeries performed were – TEP, TAPP, Open inguinal herniotomy for pediatric hernia, Laparoscopic-assisted percutaneous internal ring suturing (PIRS) for pediatric hernia, and IPOM Plus.
After each surgery, a round table discussion and presentation on the same topic followed that could cover a plethora of techniques and case discussions in hernia surgery.
The workshop module for OT assistants was well taken by post-graduate students as well. It included a comprehensive discussion on important topics like Sterilization, maintenance, and upkeeping of laparoscopic instruments, and troubleshooting and technique of Camera holding. After every case, a live demo was given stressing on importance of cleaning and disinfection. This workshop was bi-lingual and was conducted by Mr. Virendra Namdev, Mr. Rohit Thakur, Mr. Narendra Chandrawat, Ms. Ravina Bairagi, Ms. Varsha, and Ms. Angurbala all OT staff at Chelawat Hospital and was appreciated by all participating, thus bringing “Hernia for all” theme of HSI true in every sense.
A lot of good work is being done in many peripheral areas but due to a lack of connectivity and a lot of other commitments peripheral surgeons fail to attend National meetings. The aim of this workshop was to empower tier three–four cities in Hernia techniques and to also train their assistants about Hernia Surgery, which was well accomplished by this workshop. Hernia society with this workshop is penetrating the peripheral cities and indeed bringing “Hernia to all” a reality.
The delegate & faculty feedback and the support received by BARD and the Management of Chelawat Hospital for the workshop was very constructive and overwhelming. The event was widely covered by the local News and print media.
The Organizers thank and acknowledge the support received from the Hernia Society of India and the President HSl – Dr Vijay Borgaonkar and Secretary – Dr. Sarfaraz Baig, Immediate past President Dr Deepraj Bhandarkar for their constant motivation in making the workshop a successful one. Dr Pradeep Chowbey sir our mentor extended his blessings through a prerecorded message, wishing us for conduct of a successful workshop.
We, the members of the organizing committee are committed to further the cause of taking India on the world map and excelling in Hernia Surgery and constantly seek support of the society in this endeavour.

Single Theme Course on Hiatus Hernia, Aurangabad
Hernia Society of India conducted a single theme course on Hiatus Hernia at Aurangabad on 9^th and 10th December 2023. This was first such course focused on Hiatus Hernia under leadership of the HSI President Dr Vijay Borgaonkar. Amongst the faculty were Dr Deepraj Bhandarkar, Dr Sarfaraz Baig , Dr Ganesh Shenoy and Dr Jaydeep Palep. Online lectures were delivered by Dr Datta from Kolkata and Dr Emily Tucker from UK. Highlights of course were live demonstration of high resolution manometry, it’s interpretation with reference to hiatus hernia, presentation on impedance pH metry , endoscopy in hiatus hernia, technical tips, and complications in hiatus hernia surgery were discussed in detail. There were 4 live operative demonstrations of hiatus hernia surgery with different modifications. Some forty surgeons all over India and also from Bangladesh participated. Nearly 20 local surgeons also participated. The course was highly appreciated by delegates and there were suggestions for organising more such courses in the future.

Live Operative Workshop in Robotic Hernia Surgery, Manipal Hospital, New Delhi
The Department of GI, MAS, Bariatric & Robotic Surgery, at Manipal Hospital, Delhi, organised a Live Operative Workshop in Robotic Hernia Surgery on 05.08.2023 endorsed by Hernia Society of India. Multiple complex Hernia procedures were demonstrated Live with the Da Vinci Robot. The workshop was attended by Surgeons from Rajasthan, UP and Andhra Pradesh. It was a certified course, and the delegates were awarded certification endorsed by the Hernia Society of India and Manipal Hospitals.

The Hernia Conclave, from basics to the latest, will be held at Life Medicity Hospital in Jabalpur on April 29-30, 2023. This two-day academic event will feature didactic lectures and a live operative workshop. The event is endorsed by the Hernia Society of India and the Jabalpur Surgeons Association. Dr. Vishal Kaliya is the Organising President, Dr. Yash Shrivastava is the Organising Secretary, and the Convenors are Dr. Mukesh Shrivastava and Dr. Vikesh Agarwal.

included Grand Inauguration Ceremony with a local newspaper press The conference followed by Lectures by Dr. Bhandarkar (President HIS) and Dr Manish( Secretary HIS) and eminent Zonal Members of the Hernia Society of India – Dr. C.P. Kothari, Dr. Kona Laxmi Kumari, Dr. Amitabh Goel, Dr. Parvinder Lubana, Dr. Rajesh Shrivastava, Dr. Ashutosh Soni, Dr. Ishant Chourasia, Dr. Sandesh Sharma, Dr. Deepak Saxena, Dr. Vinamra Jain & Dr. C.R.K. Prasad. Around 150 Surgeons from Mahakaushal Region attended the The event,enriching their knowledge and skills in recent advances in Laparoscopic hernia management.

Day 2

of Live Operative Workshop showcast various Live Surgeries on ETEP, ETEP- RS, Fundoplication, Hybrid IPOM, TEP, TAPP by eminent Faculties and PG paper presentation By Jabalpur Surgeons Association. All the Faculty and Delegates were felicitated with kits and certificates and Delegates were encouraged to join HSI Membership.

A half-day workshop was held at Gurjar hospital, Indore on 11th June 2023. Following cases were operated 1. Laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication was done by Dr Abhishek 2. Bilateral inguinal hernia TAPP was done by Dr C P Kothari 3. Umbilical hernia eTEP Rives Stoppa repair was done by Dr Nikunj 4. Umbilical hernia ventral patch was done by Dr C L Gurjar 5. Laparoscopic Toupet fundoplication was done by Dr Ashutosh Soni The workshop was attended by 50 doctors from Indore and neighboring cities and online more than 300 from all over India.

Live Hernia CME Workshop, Patna

A single day Hernia CME Workshop was organized at IGIMS, Patna on 18th March 2023. It was endorsed by ASI, Bihar Chapter and Hernia Society of India. Dr Vijay Mittal was the Organising Chairman and Dr Sanjay Kumar was the Organising secretary.

Dr Sarfaraz J Baig and Dr Sumeet Shah were the invited faculty. It was attended by 130 delegates, comprising of practicing surgeons, and residents. Five live surgeries were demonstrated. TARM for Incisional hernia, Bilateral TEP for Rec. Inguinal, IPOM PLUS, Open Rives Stoppa repair and TAPP. Two guest lectures on Preop preparations for Ventral hernia and Demystifying TEP. A Quiz on Hernia surgery for residents with token cash prize was also done. It was well attended and appreciated by the delegates.
